Calmer Focus at Home: Headphones, Earplugs, White Noise and a Balance Board

Updated 2026-10-17 · By the Clearly Picked team

A home is rarely quiet in the day: deliveries, family, neighbours, traffic. And if you work at a standing desk, staying still for long stretches can be hard too.

These four picks tackle that in different ways. Two shut noise out, one masks it for the whole room, and one gives restless energy somewhere to go while you think.

What to look for before you buy

Block noise or mask it?

Headphones and earplugs block sound for you alone. A white noise machine masks sudden sounds for everyone in the room, which suits shared spaces and people who don't like anything in or on their ears.

Think about calls

If you're on calls a lot, the Sony headphones handle both. Earplugs are best for quiet, focused work between calls.

Movement counts too

If you use a standing desk and find it hard to settle, a balance board gives you gentle movement without leaving the desk. Start with a few minutes at a time.
