Switch-Off Rituals: Four Things That Help End the Working Day at Home

Updated 2026-10-17 · By the Clearly Picked team

When your office is also your home, there's no commute to separate work from the rest of the day. Many people find a small, repeatable ritual helps: something you do that isn't work, and that tells you the working day is over.

These four picks are a little different from the usual desk gadgets. One dims your room slowly in the evening, one is a screen-free build, one turns a coffee break into a proper pause, and one gives you something living to look after. All are on Amazon UK.

1. Best overall: Lumie Bodyclock Glow 150

Lumie invented the wake-up light, and the Bodyclock Glow 150 is the one Tom's Guide gives its Recommended badge, calling its sunrise and sunset realistic and its buttons simple, with no app needed. In the evening you can set a 20, 30 or 45-minute sunset with one of 10 sounds, so the room winds down on its own. In the morning it does the reverse with a gradual sunrise. The display dims with the room, and it comes with a 3-year warranty. It's sold and dispatched by Amazon.

Key features

  • 20, 30 or 45-minute sunset and sunrise
  • 10 sounds
  • Display dims with the room
  • 3-year warranty
  • Sold and dispatched by Amazon

Great for

  • An evening wind-down routine
  • Dark winter mornings
  • People who don't want another app

Not ideal for

  • Anyone who wants app or smart-home control
  • Very small bedside tables

Worth knowing: Tom's Guide notes the sunset has to be started each night. The sounds are fairly basic.

2. Best screen-free hobby: LEGO Botanicals Mini Orchid (10343)

Building something with your hands is a good way to stop thinking about work, and LEGO's Botanicals sets are made for adults. The Mini Orchid is one of the smaller ones: 274 pieces, five peach flowers with buds and leaves in a terracotta-look pot, about 25 cm tall when finished. Brickset's review calls it life-sized and praises the realistic leaves. It's a one or two-evening project, then it lives on your desk or shelf. It's sold and dispatched by Amazon.

Key features

  • 274 pieces
  • About 25 cm tall
  • Printed and app instructions
  • Sold and dispatched by Amazon

Great for

  • Switching off without a screen
  • A small evening project
  • Desk or shelf decor

Not ideal for

  • People who dislike repetitive steps
  • Homes with very young children (small parts)

Worth knowing: Brickset notes the back looks a little messy. Building five near-identical flowers is repetitive.

3. Best break ritual: HARIO V60 Ceramic Dripper (02)

A coffee break is more of a break when it takes a little care. The Hario V60 is the classic pour-over cone, and Reviewed names the ceramic V60 its best pour-over coffee maker overall, praising how quickly it brews and how easy it is to clean. You heat water, fold a paper filter, and pour slowly over the grounds for a few minutes: long enough to step away from the screen, short enough for a working day. The size 02 makes 1 to 4 cups. It's sold and dispatched by Amazon.

Key features

  • Size 02: 1 to 4 cups
  • Ceramic holds heat
  • Easy to clean
  • Sold and dispatched by Amazon

Great for

  • A mid-morning or afternoon pause
  • Coffee lovers
  • Small kitchens

Not ideal for

  • Anyone who wants coffee at the push of a button
  • Large batches

Worth knowing: Takes a few tries to get right. Needs V60 paper filters (sold separately) and ideally a gooseneck kettle.

A few living plants make a desk feel less like an office, and checking on them is a small daily ritual. The Smart Garden 3 grows three plant pods under its own LED light, which switches on and off automatically, with water in a built-in tank. Popular Science names it the best indoor herb garden overall, and Cook's Illustrated named it the best compact garden in its tests. It comes with basil to start. Sold by Click & Grow and dispatched by Amazon.

Key features

  • 3 plant pods, basil included
  • Automatic LED grow light
  • Built-in water tank
  • Silent

Great for

  • Desks and kitchen worktops
  • People without a garden
  • A small daily ritual

Not ideal for

  • Large harvests
  • Spots without a socket

What to look for before you buy

Pick a ritual you'll repeat

The best ritual is one you actually do. If you're a coffee person, the V60 fits easily into a working day. If evenings blur into work, a light that dims on a timer does the remembering for you.

Make it physical

Things you do with your hands, like building a set, brewing coffee or tending plants, are a clear change from typing. That change is what makes them feel like a break.

Keep work and rest apart

If you can, close the laptop and put it out of sight at the end of the day, and keep your ritual away from your desk. The Glow 150 lives by the bed, and the V60 lives in the kitchen.

How we chose

We looked for unusual, well-made products that give home workers a simple ritual to start or end the working day, with independent coverage from Tom's Guide, Brickset, Reviewed, Popular Science and Cook's Illustrated, and checked each is currently available on Amazon UK.

We haven't tried these products in person, and none of them is a medical product. Our picks are based on manufacturer information, independent reviews and listing information, which we checked on 17 October 2026.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Lumie Glow 150 need an app?

No. It's set up with buttons on the light itself.

Is the LEGO Mini Orchid hard to build?

No. It's 274 pieces with printed instructions, and most people finish it in an evening or two. Some steps repeat, because the five flowers are almost identical.

What else do I need for the V60?

Size 02 V60 paper filters, ground coffee and a kettle. A gooseneck kettle makes pouring easier but isn't essential.
